Sweden Most Exposed to Wind Power Disinformation in Europe

A new European report shows that Sweden is currently the country in Europe most affected by false and misleading information about wind power on social media. “Disinformation about renewables hurts all Europeans that want affordable, reliable and fossil free power.” says Per Witalisson, CEO of Eolus.

A new European report shows that Sweden is currently the country in Europe most affected by false and misleading information about wind power on social media. 
According to the report “Wind Energy Dis‑ and Misinformation – Undermining Europe’s Security and Competitiveness”, published by WindEurope in collaboration with CASM Technology, Sweden had the highest number of identified social media posts containing false or misleading claims about wind power during the period May 2024 to February 2026. 
In total, around 6,900 such posts were identified in Sweden – more than in any other market, including France, Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom. The report highlights that misleading narratives in Sweden often focus on claims about high costs, technical unreliability of wind power and risks to security of electricity supply. 

Commenting on the findings, Per Witalisson, CEO of Eolus, said:

WindEurope’s analysis shows that disinformation about wind power is concentrated in a limited number of European countries, including Sweden, France, Finland and Norway. At the same time, the report makes clear that misleading narratives circulate across borders and platforms, making disinformation a European challenge rather than a purely national one. 
Social media algorithms play a significant role by amplifying content that triggers fear or outrage. In some cases, misleading narratives also spill over into mainstream media, giving them wider reach and increased legitimacy. 

Per Witalisson emphasized the broader implications for Europe’s energy transition:

“The energy transition depends on trust. When misleading narratives spread, they risk slowing down the deployment of renewables that Europe urgently needs for competitiveness, security and electrification.” 

The report links disinformation campaigns to real‑world consequences. Across Europe, wind power projects worth billions of euros have been delayed or cancelled following campaigns based on exaggerated or false claims. According to the authors, this increases investment uncertainty and slows down the expansion of domestic, affordable energy production.
